FIREWOOD FAQS

  • What type of firewood should I buy?

It will depend on your personal preferences and budget. It is recommended that you buy seasoned firewood as it burns longer and produces more heat. Softwood can be used but they burn faster and create more creosote buildup in your chimney.

  • How much firewood do I need?

The amount of firewood you need depends on the usage and size of your fireplace or wood-burning stove. In general, a cord, which is a 4ft x 4ft x 8ft stack, should last the average household a winter season.

  • Where can I buy firewood?

Firewood can be bought from your local firewood supplier like Wooden Nickels. You can often find firewood at your local home improvement store, hardware store, or garden center too.

  • How do I know if the firewood is seasoned?

Seasoned firewood is wood that has been dried for at least 6-12 months after being cut. It should have a moisture content of around 20% or less. You can check the moisture content using a moisture meter or by inspecting the wood for cracks and a grayish color.

  • How should I store firewood?

Firewood should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated area and kept off the ground. If left on the ground, it can absorb moisture causing the wood to rot and attract pests to the wood pile. It is best to store it outdoors and on a firewood rack or pallet.

  • Can I store firewood indoors?

It is not recommended that you store firewood indoors because it can attract pests and rodents to your home. However, you can keep a small bundle in your home for immediate use if it is dried out and not infested.

  • How long does firewood last?

The lifespan of firewood depends on several factors such as the moisture content, type of wood, and where the firewood is stored. In general, well-seasoned hardwood will burn 1-2 hours per log.
